Project: Escape From Olduvai Ridge

For this project we were given a choice of projects to complete. Below are listed the options for projects:

1) Prepare for a debate on a controversial US topic, and deliver a debate arguing your side of the topic.

2) Create an immersive VR setting relating to a lesson taught in class.

3) Create a board game relating to a lesson taught in class.

4) Create an informative pamphlet about the (then upcoming) US Midterm Election.

I opted to create a board game individually, which I called Escape From Olduvai Ridge. Players would start the game playing as an alien stranded on a planet, trying to repair their spaceship and get home. In order to win the game, players would have to collect resources from the world by moving around the game board, and refine certain materials through burning them with tools.

From a technical standpoint, the game was a lot of work. As I was the only group member, I had to create all of the graphics, rules, and test each piece to perfection. As for graphics, I made resource tiles and a fully functional game board.

The game was not chosen to be sponsored, as was one of the goals of the project, but I learned a lot about iterating through designs over the course of the project.

Here are some of my designs! ->

Project: Cosmic Context Essay

This project was a culmination of about a week of lessons on the thoughts on astronomy various civilizations have had. We studied the beliefs of the Aboriginal Austrailians, the findings of Annie Jump Cannon, and the poetry/history of Carl Saegan, to name a few. Then, we wrote and critiqued an essay about our beliefs on whether humanity truly makes a difference in the universe.
