A few… interesting things have happened at my internship that I haven’t had the excuse to talk about so far. I’ll start chronologically for this one.

Thursday, January 10, 2019- I Got Locked Out Of The Office

I’ll give this one a little background for those of you that aren’t in the eleventh grade at HTHI. The day before my internship started, I had one final day of school. We prepared for internship, emailed our mentors to let them know we were coming, and wrote our first blog. Mind you, this was all in the first few hours, so we had a little time to kill afterwards. So, we put on skits. Instead of pretending to be characters in a book or play, we acted out worse-case scenarios for internships, and what to do and not to do. There were a lot of problems that we acted out; what to do if you had a class at the same time as internship, what to do if your mentor wasn’t being helpful… and what to do if your mentor doesn’t show up before you.

When I got to the office that Thursday and the doors were locked, I had a moment of déjà vu. Luckily, thanks to my classmate David’s excellent acting, I knew what to do. I texted my mentor saying that I was there, I texted Lucas, my internship advisor, letting him know that I was locked out, I went down to the lobby to wait, and then, only then, did I text my school group chat “YO I’M LOCKED OUT, rip me :(”. I didn’t have to wait long, though. Elijah showed up a few minutes later and showed me to another office to wait, and in a few minutes my mentors had arrived and I could begin the work day.

Thursday, January 24, 2019- Lunch

The other thing that happened over internship was a lot better than getting locked out. On the second week of internship, I found out that Mykel was working at the California Innocence Project, and she invited me to lunch. It took a little bit of rescheduling (a lot of rescheduling, if I’m honest), but we managed to figure it out. When I got to the building, I found out that a lot of other HTHI juniors were interning there, and I ended up going to lunch with around six other people. We got tacos, and talked about the similarities between our internships, and I got to see their building firsthand. It was really interesting to meet with people in a similar internship. We had a lot of things in common- the confusion over dress code, the less strict work environments, but we also had some differences. They were interacting with people their own age every day, and were dressed more casually, but they were also doing a lot of basic intern tasks I wasn’t, like answering phones or reading mail. All in all, though, I had a good time, even though the walk there was a lot longer than I originally thought.
